Tonal Mimicry Exercise
Each of the three exercises below contains one of the native, normal-speed mandarin phrases from the last page. Now instead of focusing on the syllables, I want you to focus exclusively on the tonal flow of the phrase.
This time, the phrase will NOT be slowed down. Instead, I have broken each phrase into two smaller pieces and repeated them several times to ingrain in your auditory memory.
This time, the phrase will NOT be slowed down. Instead, I have broken each phrase into two smaller pieces and repeated them several times to ingrain in your auditory memory.
- First listen to the smaller chunks, and try your best to tune your ear to the tones and mimic them.
- Once you are comfortable with the two chunks, listen to the complete phrase and do your best to commit the tonal flow to your auditory memory.
- Once you are comfortable with the tonal flow, click the "Submit Recording" button and record yourself saying the phrase two times. Do not worry about your syllable pronunciation - focus on mimicking the tonal flow perfectly.
